BOXING FOR FITNESS – IS IT TIME TO GIVE IT A TRY?

The sport of boxing is nothing new. In fact, it has been around for centuries (the earliest evidence of boxing dates back to Egypt around 3000 BC!) However, traditionally there was a stigma around boxing that it is only suitable for “strong” people – or only for men. Did you know that it took 100 years for women to be allowed in the Olympics!? That’s just ludicrous!

Of course, in 2021 we are much more progressive and boxing has now become popular worldwide – not only for entertainment but also for fitness. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce boxing classes to all Vitality Health Club members this year with our expert team of coaches. We’re so excited to bring boxing to VHC in the form of group fitness classes as well as one-on-one coaching sessions.

At this point you may be wondering – why bother? What can boxing do for me that my usual fitness routine cannot?

Well, studies show that boxing offers a plethora of physical (and mental) benefits.. These include:

  • Improved balance;
  • Improved posture;
  • Strengthened upper- body and core;
  • Boosted endurance;
  • Increased alertness;
  • Improved hand-eye coordination.

 Boxing also helps to release endorphins and improve your mood. Since it requires more mental capacity and concentration than traditional fitness methods (especially at the beginner stage as you’re learning a new skill), you have no choice but to switch off from the outside world. This allows you to just live in the moment, forget about your worries and de-stress for at least 45 minutes.

What’s more, boxing is very much a social sport in that you typically train with a group (or a partner). When you’re boxing, you’re never alone, which means you can help to motivate one another, learn from each other and perhaps even make some new friends in the process.

 Perhaps you are thinking: “I love my existing fitness routine – I don’t want to give that up”. Well, the good news is – you don’t have to. Boxing is a perfect way to complement your fitness regime; whether that be HIIT workouts, heavy lifting, swimming, spin class dancing or something else entirely. Boxing is essentially strength and conditioning training, so it will make your muscles, joints, and bones stronger, allowing you to improve the quality of your workouts. 

 Our boxing sessions are also suitable for those looking to fine tune their skills and perhaps even move into the world of professional boxing. Our coaches will help you to learn new techniques, enhance existing ones and make that segue into the fighting league, should you wish to.
