Strength for Life 50+

A progressive exercise program for older adults, built to improve strength, balance, coordination and endurance. It runs three mornings a week at our Berri club and it is included in your membership.

What it is

A program, not a drop-in class

It starts with an assessment, sets a level, and builds from there, which is why people who have never set foot in a gym are able to start on it.

Strength
Progressive resistance work, built up over time instead of thrown at you in week one.
Balance
Work on stability, which is the thing most likely to matter later on.
Coordination
Movement patterns practised slowly, at a pace that leaves room to correct them.
Endurance
Enough conditioning to make ordinary days easier, not to leave you wrecked.

Before your first session

The pre-entry assessment

Every new participant does a short assessment before starting. We go through your history, what you want out of the program, and anything we should work around, then set your starting level. The initial assessment is a one-off fee of $40.

It is not a fitness test and there is nothing to pass. It exists so the first session is pitched correctly, which is the difference between a program you keep doing and one you try once.

Questions

About Strength for Life

Strength for Life 50+ is an exercise program for older adults that builds physical strength and fitness through progressive training. It works on strength, balance, coordination and endurance, and it starts from wherever you are and assumes no background in the gym.
No. The program is progressive, so the first session is a starting point and not a test. A pre-entry assessment is done before you begin so the work is set at the right level for you.
We go through your history, what you want out of it and anything we need to work around, then set your starting level. It happens before your first session and it is the reason people who have never trained before can join this program with confidence. It is a one-off $40.
Strength for Life runs at our Berri club, 16 Kay Ave, Monday at 09:00, Wednesday at 08:30 and Thursday at 09:00. Each session runs 60 minutes.
The classes themselves are included in every membership. Strength for Life is a group fitness class, so there is no separate program fee on top of what you already pay. The one part that does cost extra is the pre-entry assessment, a one-off $40 before your first session, whether you are a member or not. If you would rather not take out a membership, you can come as a non-member for $10 a session, or $90 for a pack of 10.
The program is built around what older adults need, and that is who it is for. If you are younger and think it would suit you, talk to the team, though there is a full timetable of other classes that may fit better.
